For tickets, visit the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or byuarts.com/tickets.

The evening will begin with the concert’s namesake piece, “Celebrations” by John Zdchlik and will include John Williams’ “Liberty Fanfare” and John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” “Hands Across the Sea” and “Radetsky March.”

Also featured will be Ronald LoPresti’s “Elegy for a Young American” composed shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and Karel Husa’s “Music for Prague 1968″ written by the Czech-born composer as a response to the oppressive events in his homeland.

Former BYU graduate student Bryant Smith recently uncovered Charles John Thomas’ “Capstone March” which was performed at the ceremonial laying of the capstone of the Salt Lake Temple in 1892. Smith’s transcription used a previously unknown copy of the work, the only other copy being placed in the capstone. It will likely be the first performance of this work in more than 100 years.

The Wind Ensemble is made up of the finest wind and percussion students in the BYU School of Music, and has toured internationally.

Brigham Young University will host the largest amateur DanceSport event in the country during the U.S. National DanceSport Championships at the Marriott Center Wednesday through Saturday, March 6-9.

Ticket options include main floor “ringside” tables, public arena chair seating and student seating. For ticket prices and to purchase tickets, visit the Marriott Center Ticket Office, byutickets.com, (801) 422-BYU1.

For the first time, the National Dance Council of America has selected the DanceSport Championship at BYU to be its showcase event of the year in amateur dance. With that distinction, the previous championship prize reward amount of $6,000 has been increased to $34,000 to provide dancers with assistance in traveling to Paris to compete in the World Amateur DanceSport Championships.

The DanceSport competition will feature dancers from across the country in more than 30 different divisions. National amateur titles will be awarded in Latin, standard, smooth, rhythm, cabaret and formation in all age categories.

The DanceSport Championships are sponsored by BYU’s Ballroom Dance Program, which had its roots in the first social dance class held at the university in 1953. Since then, the program has rapidly progressed and is considered the most comprehensive study of ballroom dancing in a university setting in the world.

Brigham Young University’s Department of Theatre and Media Arts will present “’The Cleverest Thief’ and selections from ‘Gone Missing’” in the Margetts Theatre Tuesday through Saturday, including matinee performances on Saturdays. Performances run Wednesday, Feb. 27 through Saturday, March 9.

Tickets are $14, with $2 discounts available to BYU alumni and senior citizens and $6 discounts for students or individuals with a BYU ID. For tickets, visit the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 orbyuarts.com/tickets. There will be no performances Sundays or Mondays. The performance on Thursday, March 7, will offer American Sign Language interpretation.

The production will feature two short pieces of theatre directed by Lindsay Livingston. Both plays have similar themes and use a distinct and contemporary storytelling approach known as devising. Devised theatre occurs when the script originates not from a writer, but through collaboration by a group of people, usually the performers.

“Gone Missing” is a 2002 play devised by the Brooklyn-based theatre company The Civilians. The piece was devised through interviews with real New Yorkers by asking one simple question: “What is something you’ve lost?”

“The Cleverest Thief” is another play devised from interviews focused on capturing the uniqueness and universality of loss, but this time the focus will be on Provo instead of New York.

“Our play, ‘The Cleverest Thief,’ is devised from the interviews that we conducted over a two-month period in 2012 and likewise investigates how the things we lose and those that we find impact how we understand ourselves, our communities and our place in the world,” Livingston said.

“We went out into our community and asked the same question; we received answers that were both similar and quite different,” she said. “We chose to tell the stories of both Provoans and New Yorkers through storytelling and various media to emphasize that how we remember our stories of loss actually shapes who we are.”

The production is also featured in 4thWall, a dramaturgy project run by the Theatre and Media Arts Department. The project works to break down the supposed wall separating the audience from the actors through insights from the rehearsal room, interesting historical information, interviews with the production team and more. For more information about 4thWall, visit 4thwalldramaturgy.byu.edu.

The cast features Annalee Hickman, Ali Kinkade, Hannah Kroff, Alizabeth Leake, James Luciano, James Lyon, Sarah Porter, Amber Richardson and Adam White.

The design and technical crew includes Hannah Richardson, production stage manager; Ariel Mitchell, dramaturg; Noah Kershisnik, production designer; Michael Kraczek, lighting designer; Hannah Kroff, prop designer; Kristy Hunter, sound designer; Josh Fawcett, master electrician; and Mark Ohran, projection system designer.

The 1965 family drama “Those Calloways” will have a one-time showing in the auditorium of the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University Friday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.).

Admission is free, but seating is limited. Children ages 8 and over are welcome. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium.

Brian Keith stars with Vera Miles, Brandon de Wilde and Linda Evans in a heart-warming story filmed in northern Vermont about a man’s fight to establish a wild goose sanctuary in the face of those who want to commercialize his lakeside property.

“Those Calloways” was another live-action feature that Disney specialized in during the 1950s and 1960s aimed at family entertainment. Its accent on youthful performers accounts for the presence of Brandon de Wilde, whose role years earlier as “Joey” in the critically acclaimed “Shane” made him known to audiences the world over.

“Those Calloways” marked the first feature film appearance of Linda Evans, who later became a household name in two long-running television series, “The Big Valley” (1965-1969) and “Dynasty” (1981-1989). It also showcased a young TV and film star named Tom Skerrit.

The showing is part of the BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series, co-sponsored by L. Tom Perry Special Collections, the Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis & Linda Gibson. The film was the final film score of Max Steiner, composer of more than 300 film scores for many of Hollywood’s greatest films, whose collection is preserved by L. Tom Perry Special Collections.

Belgian violist Dmitri Murrath will be the guest artist at Brigham Young University’s annual William Primrose Memorial Concert Friday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

The program will feature “Sonata für Bratsche allein” by Paul Hindemith and Suite VI, BWV 1012 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Following an intermission the performance will conclude with “Manto” by Giacinto Scelsi and “Sarasateana” by Efrem Zimbalist.

Murrath has won numerous awards, including first prize at the Primrose International Viola Competition, second prize at the First Tokyo International Viola Competition, the special prize for the contemporary work at the ARD Munich Competition, Verbier Festival Academy’s Viola Prize and a fellowship from the Belgian–American Educational Foundation.

With repertoire extending from Bach to contemporary music by Ligeti, Kurtag and Sciarrino, Murrath has taken part in the Park Lane Group New Year Series in London to great critical acclaim, as well as commissioned, given world premieres and recorded several solo works.

Murrath began his musical education at the Yehudi Menuhin School studying with Natalia Boyarsky and went on to work in London with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

He graduated with an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory as a student of Kim Kashkashian. He is now on the viola faculty of the Longy School of Music of Bard College and the New England Conservatory.

The Primrose Memorial Concert is an annual event that honors legendary violist and former BYU faculty member, William Primrose (1903–1982). The concert series features violists from around the globe who, like Primrose, distinguish themselves on the instrument and promote its scholarship.
